Webz & Tour Collierville
Keith, what got you started in this business?
My partners (including my wife Shannon) and I have been in the digital advertising business in Memphis for many years. We purchased Webz and Tour Collierville for a variety of business reasons, like rounding out our service offerings by adding print and graphic design in-house, but I don’t suppose those are at heart of this question.
I guess I am like a roadie, but to marketing creatives rather than musicians. Think of the technical guy that starts off running the sound or lights for a band and works his way up to Producer. I imagine he’s inspired by the music, but isn’t a full-on musician. My skillset is strategy development and analysis, which is technical - but I am inspired by the creative process. I was hooked the first time I sat in an ad agency and listened to creatives brainstorm advertising campaign themes for a client. This creative process is more of an art than it is a service. Even sketching logo ideas and writing tag lines can be inspiring. Simply put, I applied my technical skillset to a creative industry so I that could be part of something highly rewarding.
Webz and Tour Collierville provide many creative opportunities. My favorite times at Tour Collierville are the production meetings. This is where the entire team gets together and plans the vision, cover, features, and other content for the upcoming issue of the bi-monthly magazine. At Webz, it’s when I can help a small business to define a marketing plan, build out that vision with our in-house team, and be a part of that business’ growth.
When did you purchase the business? Are there any big changes planned?
My partners and I purchased Webz and Tour Collierville in October, 2016 – just a couple months ago. We are in still in the process of combining our existing digital advertising company (Propane Media) which provides website programming, web applications, and online advertising with the Webz team which focuses on small business branding, graphic design and print media. The plan is to evolve each business by leveraging the strengths of a combined team to create a more comprehensive service offering. In the past, each business may have outsourced the respective offerings of the other. By doing more in-house, we can better control the quality of our product and improve our customer service.
As for Tour Collierville, we are evolving the magazine by adding more local contributors and by reimaged distribution to cover more of Collierville with each issue. With the help of Tour Collierville’s previous owner, who now provides editorial services, Tour Collierville will soon get an updated look too.
How is your business unique? What kind of experience can be expected by doing business with you and your team?
In a word, planning. We focus on precisely defining success and then measuring it. We work with our clients to ensure we understand their goals and/or help to develop them. From there, every product we deliver is deliberately and carefully designed to achieve these pre-defined client goal(s). Business identity (logos, tag lines), brochures, websites, and advertisements are all based on playing unique roles in an upper level strategy. While creative exercises are fun and exciting, they are continually informed by a marketing strategist. Our small business clients can expect us to get into their business with them, understand the needs, and lead them to successful marketing and advertising.
Why is Collierville a great place for your business?
From a business perspective, Collierville provides us the opportunity to reach many growing small businesses, which are our client focus. As Collierville small businesses grow, we will grow, and that’s the way we want it. In addition, the town, and our location close to the town square, allows us to attract talented team members. Outside of downtown Memphis, it’s rare to find an area in this market where you easily walk to a coffee shop, lunch spot, or to a park bench to cultivate the creative mind.
Shannon and I moved to Memphis in the mid-nineties. We quickly determined that Collierville was the place we wanted to raise our family. It took us a few stepping stones to work our way here, but we finally bought our first Collierville house in 2004. I suppose that, since then, we have been subconsciously wanting to move our business here too. Although we do have locations and partners in Memphis, and it’s taken us many years again, Collierville is now the business headquarters.
While Collierville is growing in many ways and it needs that growth to sustain small businesses, it’s still a big town of family and friends. Our business is made up of family and friends. It’s not uncommon for our spouses, kids, parents, and friends to be at the office helping out, or just hanging out. Our Collierville clients don’t mind that, in fact, they seem to like it. It just makes sense for us.
Shannon, we’d love to know more about your family and interests. What are your favorite Collierville traditions?
Our Christmas tradition starts with picking out a fresh tree from the Boy Scout lot in town. We've done that every year for as long as I can remember, and take “Shop Local” seriously for all of our gift buying too. We love attending the tree lighting at the Town Square. It's a beautiful moment to start the joy of Christmas together as a family. We both grew up in small towns in MS, so Collierville reminds us of that. This year was very special to us since our Serendipity art exhibit opening was the same night as the tree lighting and we were able to attend both! It’s such a blessing to live and work in The ‘Ville!”
What activities do you enjoy together as a family?
Keith and I have been married 23 years and we’ve always loved traveling. We are a big music family and spend a lot of our free time going to concerts. We've traveled around for years watching our son, Austin, play tennis. This is his last year since he's a senior in college. Our daughter, Alex, plays guitar so music is becoming a big part of her life as well.”
Are there any non-profit organizations you’re close with?
We've supported St. Jude and Memphis Union Mission for the last 20 years or so. Now that we work in Collierville, it’ll be easier to see what we can get involved with in our local community as well. We recently featured some outstanding local non-profit organizations in THIS ARTICLE of the magazine.
Our Webz office is located at the corner of West Poplar and N. Main Street at the Town Square. We welcome visitors to stop by, pick up a copy of the magazine and enjoy the artwork. Our Serendipity Exhibit features the artwork of Eileen Cashbaugh and Jeanette Leake through January 20th. Follow us on the Tour Collierville site and Webz Facebook page. We’re excited to roll out our next Tour Collierville issue after January 15th which will include a Bridal feature as well as Collierville special events and insight from local community leaders!
We’re getting to know our Town Square business neighbors and thrilled to work so close to home. When you’re ready to talk about your business, we’re ready to get started!
