What got you started in this business?
Donuts have always reminded me of sweet childhood memories! The idea of providing tasty treats for the public began to occupy my thinking and it made sense to bring my many years of community development experience into my own business. I admire the common ground and camaraderie in sharing donuts with friends and family. Donut making felt like a good fit and I really enjoy the high energy of our group parties and special events.
I researched the donut industry while seeking an affordable location with growth potential. I was looking for an area that would respond well to a high level of customer service and had protections against economic fluctuations. I was thrilled to find a space in Collierville four years ago and my donut dream was launched! Donut Hutt was a great opportunity at the right time for our family.
When did you open the business?
We purchased the business in 2013 and immediately started recipe and equipment improvements. Donuts have been served at this location since 2005, and we still have customers that have been coming here since then! My business philosophy is very simple, keep people happy and they’ll come back. We talk to the customers every day and find out what they love and what we can improve. We embrace new ideas and are always trying different flavors and testing them with our customers for immediate feedback. If we get a new suggestion, we can frequently make that custom donut creation on the spot. We have a huge variety of toppings, frostings and glazes every day, so a special request is a fun challenge for us. I encourage creativity and responsive service with my team, and it shows in the repeat business we enjoy.
Tell us about your customers! Why do they come to you?
Collierville has responded to our efforts to provide the "sweetest" customer service and tasty treats every day. We have families who have a strong loyalty to our Apple Fritters. There are seniors who come in daily for social time and breakfast. We have little kids whose eyes light up when they see the sprinkles. There are Moms who need a coffee break and an inviting place for their toddlers to play with our toys and books. We see busy professionals that stop by every day on the way to work for a maple bacon donut or a take-out dozen for the work crew or office. We serve preschools and K-12 schools with Donuts for Dads events and other big celebrations.
A community donut shop like ours is the place where everyone can come together. I enjoy providing a welcoming space for people to sit down and have a break from their busy lives. Our family game and play area keeps fidgety kids happy, while Mom or Dad may be checking email on our Wi-Fi.
What started as a way to share the fun of donut making has now become a powerful category of our business. We owe this success to the good people in The ‘Ville spreading the word about our birthday parties. We’ve hosted over 15,000 kids in our shop who’ve learned to make their own donuts. Our parties are so popular, even corporate “team building” groups are starting to take notice! It’s a truly unique experience we enjoy sharing.
Tell us about a "day in the life" of you in your business.
Our day at the shop begins at midnight with donuts being made. Our opening staff prepares donuts for sale and we open the doors at 5am. We may have a school field trip or team building donut making session that day, so we prepare early for those.
Donuts require 45 minutes of rest before being shaped, cut, cooked and topped. It takes about 4-6 hours to make a small batch of donuts.
We also spend a lot of energy making sure our leftover donuts go somewhere useful. We are always looking for more causes to donate everyday leftover donuts to.
What makes our town special to you and why is it a great place for your business?
Our customers are quick to help all the community causes that we publicize. Every day, I am amazed at the kindness for others that the people of Collierville show.
As a small business owner, I truly feel a strong sense of community in our Town. The encouragement we’ve received from everyone has given us a great boost. It’s such a supportive atmosphere. Organizations that I’ve worked with locally are knowledgeable, professional and genuinely interested in my success. Collierville is simply a terrific place to do business!
Tell us about your story! Family, interests and hobbies:
My wife Jennifer is nearly a 20 year veteran teacher and the rock of our house. My boys (8 & 10 years old) love it when I bring donuts and chocolate milk home. My dogs like to find accidental treats on my shoes when I get home! I look forward to playing with the kids and dogs every day when I get home from work!
What new things should we look for at Donut Hutt?
King Cakes are back for Mardi Gras! Between now and “Fat Tuesday” on February 28th, we’ll be offering regular and jumbo sized King Cakes daily at the store. They go fast, so pre-order if you want to get one for a specific day.
We now deliver through Chef Shuttle. They have a corporate catering division that we have worked with for large orders that will deliver in the morning to businesses. Our coffee is roasted fresh locally as well. Have a king cake delivered in Collierville by chef shuttle!
Keep looking for new things from us. We’re going to be trying a number of new menu items this year and we'll need everyone’s feedback to keep the right mix for Collierville! Stop on by and see us soon to try one of our sweet treats!
