The company was opened in 1984 in Collierville, TN by Farrell Evans who had prior experience working for a building products distributor. When the business opened, Collierville was a rural farm area and Farrell sold discount, shop-grade materials for sheds and similar structures. Some 35 years later, the business has grown exponentially and now provides supplies to some of the largest home builders in the area.
Farrell’s son, Mark, worked with him during the early years of the business. In 1989, Mark came on full time and has been on board ever since in roles ranging from delivery and sales to warehouse services and operations. He began overseeing management for the company when his father retired in 2004. Mark continues to lead the organization today, with an emphasis on honoring God in how the business is run. His leadership philosophy is that the business exists not only to be financially profitable, but to provide employees a quality work culture that helps clients succeed.
In 2015, Richard Cooper, a lifelong Memphian with more than 20 years of building industry experience, bought into the company and became a partner. That same year, Thrifty realized a dream of Mark and his father when the company opened the Door Shop. Richard manages the Door Shop in addition to overseeing the sales team and working closely with Mark on business development following his personal business philosophy that, “when you provide excellent service, the sales will follow.”
A good steward of the community, Thrifty Building Supply recently donated lumber for the 2019 St. Jude Dream Home, and participates annually as the non-profit’s partner in this worthwhile cause.
Mark enjoys carrying on the commitment to community and service that his father instilled when he started the business 35 years ago. “Even when my father retired, he was always interested in how the business was doing, new industry trends and our support of the local community.” Sadly, Farrell Evans passed away on April 27, 2018 after a battle with cancer.
In an effort to pay tribute to the company’s history, promote Farrell’s values of Faith, Integrity, Dependability, Service and Family, and share the company’s latest innovations, Thrifty Building Supply recently launched its new website, www.ThriftyBuilding.com.
With the help of local marketing consultant and owner of Ewing Marketing Partners, Susan Ewing, Thrifty Building Supply launched the brand’s new website in February of 2019, along with a refreshed logo and new tagline: Building Relationships. Delivering Value.
“This was a completely new experience for us,” said Mark. “Susan took the time to get to know us and understand our business to help us establish branding efforts that reflect what we’re all about. Our new positioning reinforces what my father always noted was the cornerstone of our success: quality relationships with those we serve.”
Thrifty Building Supply’s facilities, vehicles and marketing materials have all been updated with the refreshed brand identity. They plan to have a customer appreciation event in April to celebrate their 35th anniversary.
With four locations, Thrifty Building Supply is a leading provider of quality lumber and related building supplies across the Mid-South region. For more information, visit www.ThriftyBuilding.com
