What got you started in this business? How did your form your ideas and business inspiration?
Writing has always been an important part of my life. What began as a childhood hobby of weaving stories led to a degree in journalism. After a few years as a reporter, I transitioned to public relations and did a lot of on-the-ground learning about the profession. What has remained constant throughout my career, though, has been a love of telling stories. It’s what we do every single day for our clients.
When did you open the business?
In 2006, I founded Obsidian PR, which is now the largest PR firm in the region. I wanted to have more control of my professional destiny, if you will, and there’s no better way to achieve that than opening your own business.
Our clients are like family. Because we work mostly on a retainer model, our relationships are very long-term in nature. We become entrenched in each client account so that we’re able to truly anticipate needs and move with a lightning-fast agility. So whether you’re a large company headquartered in Memphis, a family business or a local nonprofit, you’ll find our team feels and operates like in-house staff.
Tell us about a "day in the life" of you in your business.
My time as owner is mostly spent on long-term agency strategy, business development and behind-the-scenes functions like accounting. Of course, I dip into client service as necessary. For our team, no day is the same, which is part of the beauty of our profession. One team member might be conducting campaign research, another writing for an e-newsletter and another wrapping up an event plan. And that’s just within the first hour of our day.
What are your favorite things about Collierville? What makes our town special to you?
This is my hometown, so there’s no place that holds the affections of my heart like Collierville does. My husband and I are raising our own family here. My kids are walking the same school hallways as I did. They’re frequenting restaurants I loved when I was younger. And they’re experiencing the same tradition and small-town charm that make Collierville such a wonderful place to call home. From a business perspective, I love supporting Collierville clients that make this town what it is. It all goes back to creating an unparalleled quality of life for our residents.
Tell us about your story! Family, interests and hobbies.
I have four children – Savannah, Jake, William and Winston. So when I’m not working or volunteering, they are part of everything I do. We love our local parks and destinations like the historic square. When I do have time to myself (once everyone else goes to bed), I love to read and catch up on movies!
